Description
This church was hit by an EF2 tornado that removed a major section of retrofitted metal roofing from the building. The tornado crushed HVAC units, leaving the three-story church building heavily exposed to the elements. Next Phase temporarily repaired the blow-off, cleaned up the debris, and developed a plan with the insurance company. The building received a new code-compliant base TPO roofing system, a new engineered framing system, and a new structural 2" standing seam roof. Additionally, 13 HVAC units, curbs, and all rooftop electrical, feeders, and disconnects were replaced. The project went seamlessly and did not interrupt church activities due to temporary air conditioning systems and a coordinated construction effort with church leadership.
A tornado also severely affected another portion of First Baptist Church Duncan. The roof system was aluminum shakes, with multiple layers of mopped asphalt shingles over a gypsum deck. Next Phase installed double layered 4x10 7/16" OSB anchoring over the steel framing, a high-temperature grade ice-and-water shield, and DaVinci Provenance Slate to provide a proper anchor point. This system was specifically engineered for the existing construction and solved major fastening issues while preserving the fire rating of the gypsum board beneath.
