EF-1 Tornado Storm Damage
When a series of storms and tornadoes hit the Oklahoma City metro area, Newcastle Elementary school was struck directly by an EF-1 tornado. The school’s gymnasium roof sustained significant damage, leaving the school and its students in urgent need of support. The existing standing seam metal roof had been overlaid with single-ply roofing by another roofing contractor, so as the wind got underneath the roofing, the membrane was picked up, rolling the metal at the same time. This left nothing but insulation on the roof, and scattered large amounts of membrane and debris across the parking lot. Early that morning, the school contacted Next Phase Roofing and we mobilized immediately to assess the situation and provide urgent repairs and restoration.

The first step was to clear the debris from the school parking lot to ensure safe access to the building, followed by water remediation efforts to make the gym safe for students and staff. With roughly three-quarters of the roof blown off and the remaining structure compromised, we implemented temporary repairs and custom panels to prevent further damage while planning a more comprehensive solution.
Next Phase Roofing’s approach involved a carefully coordinated plan with the district’s administration and insurance provider to restore the gymnasium quickly. In close collaboration with school leadership, we developed a plan to keep disruptions to a minimum and allow the gym roof to function as early as the same week. The school board is actively exploring replacement options, and a permanent solution will soon be underway. In the meantime, we’re pleased to have restored the gym roof’s functionality for students and staff in a timely manner.
